STARTING in March 2025, Penang Smart Parking (PSP) users will face a 50% increase in parking fees at designated lots, following a decision approved today by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
MBPP Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran announced the fee revision during the council’s monthly meeting, explaining that the hike is essential for maintaining parking sensors and other upgrades aimed at enhancing the PSP system.
“We are not implementing this increase to generate profit. The primary objective is to ensure the parking system remains efficient and beneficial for all users. This includes regulating parking durations to ensure fair access for everyone,” Rajendran said at the City Hall in Esplanade.
He noted that the last review of parking rates occurred in the 1990s.
“This adjustment is crucial for us to deliver better services to the people,” he added.
Under the new rates, parking fees will increase as follows, RM0.40 for 30 minutes to RM0.60, RM0.80 for one hour to RM1.20, and RM6 per day to RM9.
Despite these increases, PSP users can enjoy reduced annual parking rates, from RM1,800 to RM1,200, between March and December 2025. Monthly charges will remain unchanged at RM150.
In a separate announcement, Rajendran revealed that starting January 2026, property assessment tax bills will no longer be delivered by post. Instead, registered property owners will receive e-bills.
“Currently, out of the 300,000 registered property owners, only 30,000 — or 10% — have signed up for the e-bill system, which can be accessed through the Pearl One Touch Penang application,” Rajendran said
The Pearl One Touch Penang app, launched by MBPP in April 2023, allows users to perform various tasks online. As an incentive, new users registering for the first time will receive a one-time RM5 rebate.
MBPP secretary Cheong Chee Hong was also present at the meeting.
