PENANG Island City Council (MBPP) is set to privatise six market complexes and hawker sites for a three-year period to revive business activities.

MBPP councilor Tan Soo Siang announced that the privatisation advertisement would be released on Nov 14, with a briefing session and site visit on Nov 20 and a closing date for applications on Nov 27 this year.

The premises are Desa Green temporary hawker site, Desa Genting Complex, Lintang Minden 2 hawker site, Lot 10126 Jalan Paya Terubong hawker site (next to Polytechnic Bistari Relau), Sri Wangsa Lorong Perak hawker site and Datuk Keramat market.

“The applicants must be companies registered in Penang Island with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and still eligible to participate in the quotation process,” Tan told a press conference today.

Tan also hoped that with the privatisation, the businesses of those market complexes and hawker sites would be restored as they are currently inactive, except for the Desa Green temporary hawker site.

“The owner of the site (Desa Green temporary hawker site) had passed away, so there is a need for a new quotation process.”

Also present were MBPP councillors Chan Soon Aun, Koay Gaik Kee, Mohd Faruk Abdul Rahman, and Chong You Ray.
