GENERAL worker Mohd Azwan Zulkifli emerged as the winner of ‘Malam Tujuh Likur’ competition held by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).

Azwan, 32, outshone 10 other competitors in the oil lamp decoration competition to mark the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Azwan (right) said it took him two to three days to complete the unique decoration.

The victory earned him a RM500 cash reward and a food hamper.

“I didn’t expect to win since it was a fierce competition from everyone.

“My oil lamps are a bit different as I used recyclable items to decorate it.

“Among the recyclable items that I used are coconut shells, discarded wood and other materials.

“It took me about two to three days to complete this unique decoration and I am so happy that it paid off in the end.

“Ever since I was a kid, I have already developed a habit of recycling things.

“So, the idea came from there,” Azwan told Buletin Mutiara after the prize-giving ceremony at the Dewan Warisan Bagan Belat in Butterworth yesterday (April 28).

MBSP secretary Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, who handed out the prizes, said the competition was held from April 14 until April 24.

“It was jointly organised by MBSP and Masjid Jamek Bagan Belat.

“We received a total of 11 entries from the residents in this area.

“The top four winners of the competition received RM500, RM350, RM200, and RM100 respectively. They also obtained a food hamper each.

“There were also five consolation winners. Each of them won RM50 and food hampers.

“After all, the objective of the competition was to encourage the public to recycle and upcycle the waste material to decorate their oil lamps. Thus, we hope more people will join such competition in the future,” he said.
