MBSP champions upcycling and waste segregation awareness

RESIDENTS of Bukit Mertajam can now look forward to a special Upcycle Carnival held monthly at Aeon Mall Bukit Mertajam, offering an engaging and educational platform for sustainable living.

 

The Upcycle Carnival and Promotion of Waste Segregation at Source is a collaborative initiative between Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and Aeon Mall Bukit Mertajam, aiming to promote environmental awareness and responsible waste management.

 

The carnival will take place on the third Sunday of every month, with the first edition having commenced yesterday (Feb 16).

MBSP mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid emphasised the importance of the carnival as a high-impact initiative designed to instil a stronger sense of environmental responsibility among the public.

“This programme seeks to educate the public on the importance of waste management and recycling, while also providing opportunities for individuals to contribute actively to environmental preservation efforts,” he said in his speech.

He highlighted that the core focus of the carnival is on upcycling, a process that transforms used materials and products by enhancing their value and function, making them more useful and high-quality.

 

“The carnival also features interactive exhibitions where visitors can explore various techniques and innovations in upcycling waste materials into reusable products such as bags, furniture, and decorative items,” he added.

 

The Upcycle Carnival and Promotion of Waste Segregation at Source was officiated by Penang Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, who praised MBSP for spearheading such an impactful initiative.

 

H’ng stated that the carnival aligns with the waste segregation at source policy, which has been in effect since July last year.

He also expressed his hopes that the initiative would create a lasting impact on environmental conservation while raising awareness on sustainable and responsible consumption practices.

 

“With its monthly presence, the Upcycle Carnival is expected to inspire more residents to adopt greener habits, actively participate in waste reduction, and embrace the principles of rethink, refuse, reuse, reduce, repair, regift, recover, and recycle,” said H’ng.

 

Also present were MBSP councillors Heng Yeh Shiuan, Cheen Goon Hooi and Ooi Yong Wooi.
