THE Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is committed to driving the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Penang and across Malaysia.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo shared this during a press conference at a dialogue session on digital adoption for SMEs in Penang. The session was held at MDEC’s office in Wisma Yeap Chor Yee on Jan 13.
Gobind said that SMEs in Malaysia make up approximately 97% of the country’s economy.
“This dialogue session serves as a platform to inform the SMEs on how digital transformation can help to empower their businesses, as many know about it but do not know how to use it.
“Technology plays an important role in how businesses operate,” he added.
Gobind also shared that MDEC has opened an office in George Town, Penang, to support SMEs and industries, acting as a mediator between them and the Federal government.
“SMEs can seek advice or help from MDEC should they have any queries.
“I have requested the office to produce a report on the digital transformation process to bring any suggestions about it to the Federal government.
“With the latest technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), we need to review the existing policies to ensure they cater to the transformation,” Gobind said.
MDEC chief executive officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil reaffirmed that the digital economy holds immense potential for Malaysia’s SMEs.
“With the right tools, guidance and determination, your businesses can achieve extraordinary success and reach their fullest potential.
“I have just returned from India with YB Minister (Gobind), where we learned about the significant advances they have made, particularly in digital ID, payments, and potential areas for partnership.
“Similarly, I hope we can work together to speed up the digital agenda in the northern region,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo and other dignitaries.
