PENANG’s famous annual vegetarian event, International Meatless Day Charity Carnival 2015, was held on Nov 1 from 10am to 3pm at the Methodist Boys School along Jalan Ayer Itam with exco member for Town and Country Planning and Housing Jagdeep Singh Deo officiated the opening ceremony.

“Penang is a food haven and it can also be a hub for vegetarian food. I urge the hotels and restaurants to offer more varieties for vegetarian food as the demand for such food from tourists and locals is increasing,” Jagdeep said in his speech.

There were more than 80 varieties of vegetarian food and refreshments of various cultures featured at this unique event.

This year, the carnival saw the introduction of several new delicacies and flavours by local restaurants and vegetarian food suppliers in Malaysia.

It was organised by the Malaysian Meatless Day Campaign Committee and all proceeds from the carnival will go to the Sadhu Vaswani Welfare Fund & FoodBANK4U

The project is in line with the Penang state’s focus to promote local tourism and support new food industries to contribute an additional avenue for long-term economic growth.

A New York group called United States Monarchy comprising four girls performed several vocal dance and hip hop numbers to entertain the crowd.
