AS the world grapples with the rise of fake news and misinformation, the role of media professionals has become more crucial than ever.
Acknowledging their commitment to delivering accurate and timely information, Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying hosted a special media night at Fort Cornwallis last evening.
Lim, who also serves as the Deputy Finance Minister, underscored the critical partnership between media personnel and the government, emphasising how their work supports effective governance.
“Media personnel play many important roles, but one that resonates deeply with me is their ability to convey government policies that impact the well-being of the public to a wider audience,” Lim said during her speech.
She also highlighted the media’s responsibility in combating misinformation.
“In an era where fake news is rampant, media professionals bear the vital task of debunking false information and championing the truth,” she added.
Lim took the opportunity to urge media members to continue their progressive reporting, particularly on the upcoming Mutiara LRT Line project, one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in Penang.
“The construction will inevitably pose challenges on the roads during its peak phases.
“This is where media personnel play a crucial role in keeping the public informed about alternative routes and updates to minimise disruptions.
“This is a step toward a better future for all,” she said, emphasising the project’s long-term benefits.
Lim also stressed the importance of fostering a strong relationship between the government and the media to drive nation-building efforts.
The event, celebrating the vital contributions of journalists and reporters, was attended by Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng.
The evening served not only as a gesture of appreciation but also as a reaffirmation of the critical role media personnel play in shaping an informed and progressive society.
Participants of the night were treated to a sumptuous dinner and walked away with various lucky draw prizes.
