A MEETING is scheduled to take place this week to discuss the vacant Sungai Bakap state seat following the passing of Perikatan Nasional (PN) elected representative Nor Zamri Latiff last week.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is also the state Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said the meeting would focus on the unity government’s preparations for the Sungai Bakap by-election.
“As I understand, the state PKR has started discussing the by-election preparations, but no official decision has been made yet.
“We will meet this week to discuss the matter further,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the State Legislative Assembly sitting.
When asked by the media if he was confident of winning the state seat, Chow noted there was a possibility.
“I understand that the people are satisfied with the cooperation between the parties in the unity government, and this will be an advantage for us,” he said.
Regarding the candidate for the unity government, Chow said the party that contested the seat in the previous state election would be given priority.
Meanwhile, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang handed over the notification of the vacancy for the Sungai Bakap state seat to the Election Commission (EC) today.
He delivered the notice to state EC director Dr Siti Nazariah Abdul Zalim per constitutional procedures.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Nor Zamri, as the passing of the first-term state assemblyman is a significant loss to us,” he said.
