IN celebration of the 67th National Day, the Bukit Bendera Parliamentary Service Centre will host the inaugural Merdeka Hike Programme 2024 on Aug 31 to promote patriotism.
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid stated that the programme will serve as a platform to cultivate a spirit of patriotism, which is now perceived to be waning in the community.
“This event, to be held in collaboration with Coway Co, will be organised for the first time as a new initiative to promote climbing sports.
“Apart from fostering patriotism, this programme highlights the state’s numerous hiking trails, particularly in the Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituency.
“Penang is renowned as a tourism hub, and programmes like this can boost the state’s economy and promote a healthy society,” said Syerleena yesterday.
Syerleena further expressed her hope that the programme would receive strong support and participation from people of all backgrounds.
“Participants can now register by scanning the QR code provided by the sponsor. Registration is limited to the first 300 participants and will close once capacity is reached.
“Children are welcome to join this 6-kilometre climbing activity under full parental supervision. A climbing crew will be stationed at each checkpoint to help if needed.
“Participants are required to assemble by 7.30am at the Bukit Bendera MPKK Hall before starting the climb to Hye Keat Meeting Point while waving the Jalur Gemilang flag. T-shirts and climbing equipment will also be provided,” she added.
Also present at the press conference were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor R. Vickneson, Village Community Management Council (MPKK) Bukit Bendera chairman R. Nelamurthi, and sponsors’ representatives.
