IT’S October and the annual Octoberfest is here once again!
After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the traditional German festival organised by the Malaysian-German Society (MGS) made a successful comeback last year.
This year, the celebration marks its 49th anniversary, strengthening the friendly ties between the German community and Penangites.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who was the guest of honour at the event last night (Oct 27), expressed his admiration for the festival’s growth.
“This milestone is a testament to the enduring popularity and significance of cultural activities in the region.
“I am proud to witness this traditional German festival being celebrated continuously in the state. It has been officially recognised as one of the local festivals of Penang by the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI).
“Penang does not only host Octoberfest, but also a diverse array of other cultural festivals such as the Japanese Bon Odori, Yosakoi Parade, Latin America Film Festival, and the Irish Saint Patrick’s Day.
“All these events contribute to the rich cultural heritage of Penang,” Wong said in his speech during the Octoberfest celebration at MGS in Air Itam.
Wong said he was grateful to MGS for continuing the German cultural activities in Penang.
He emphasised that it is a great opportunity to bring people from diverse backgrounds together in one place.
The attendees were treated to stage performances, sumptuous German delicacies, and cultural shows.
The Octoberfest 2023 celebration will continue at MGS in Air Itam today (Oct 28).
