BEGINNING today, food truck operators and vendors operating their businesses using motorcycles and private vehicles are required to apply for licences from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

Tan Soo Siang, the MBPP Public Health and Licencing chairman, announced the new requirement after attending a council meeting. She noted a rise in vendors conducting their businesses using private vehicles and motorcycles.

“We are addressing this issue, and we encourage these mobile operators to apply for licences.

“This initiative will allow traditional vendors like the ‘roti man’ selling the people’s favourite bread from motorcycles to be recognised.

“However, their operating time at a spot cannot be more than 30 minutes, a rule that does not apply to private vehicles and food trucks,” she said when asked by media.

Regarding licencing costs, Tan pointed out the fees vary based on the type of vehicle used.

She added that the licence fees for motorcycle operators are RM15 per month, private vehicles RM100 per month, and food trucks RM450 per month (for up to three locations).
