THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is committed to providing more neighbourhood parks in various residential areas within the state.

MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said this initiative is in line with the Penang2030 vision, which aims to improve liveability, economy, civic participation and balanced development to achieve a ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.

He said for this year, MBPP has allocated RM5.2 million for the provision and upgrading of neighbourhood parks.

Rajendran said for this year, MBPP has allocated RM5.2 million for the provision and upgrading of neighbourhood parks.

“We also provide regular maintenance for every neighbourhood park under the city council’s jurisdiction.

“This is because we believe that with the proper maintenance and upgraded facilities, neighbourhood parks will become more liveable and well-utilised by residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

“For example, the Bukit Jambul Neighbourhood Park was completed last year at a cost of RM714,000.

“This park is unique as it is surrounded by various types of trees and equipped with proper facilities for recreational activities. We are committed to building more of these parks in the state,” Rajendran said in his speech during the state-level Hari Landskap Negara at the Bukit Jambul Neighbourhood Park recently.

The programme was graced by the presence of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his consort Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Noor.

Also present were state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye and Batu Uban assemblyman Kumaresan Arumugam.

Meanwhile, in his speech, H’ng set a target for Penang to plant 100,000 pinang trees for the state-level Hari Landskap Negara next year.

He said he would instruct MBPP and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to find proper locations for the trees to be planted so that they can grow healthily.
