PREPARATIONS for the Penang State Christmas Celebration 2024 at Padang Dataran Pemuda Merdeka on Dec 7 are progressing smoothly, according to Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico) general manager Paul Au.

While Christmas Day falls on Dec 25, Au noted that the state-level celebration on Dec 7 is intended to set the festive tone early, complementing the various programmes organised by churches on Christmas Day itself.

The event is a joint initiative by the Penang government, through Harmonico, in partnership with the Christian Federation of Malaysia (Penang Chapter) and local churches. It is being organised with the support of the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).

Au says canopies and Christmas decorations will be set up about five days ahead of the Dec 7 celebration.

Au shared that preparations are on track, with sufficient food trucks and Christmas market vendors confirmed for the celebration. However, they are still seeking additional volunteers.

“We currently have 30 volunteers but are looking for 30 more. Those interested can apply now at harmonico.my,” Au said.

He also highlighted the event as a meaningful platform for public engagement, particularly for youths, in line with the Penang2030 vision.

“It’s a great opportunity for young people to participate and learn about organising a state-level event,” he added.

Christmas decorations will be installed at the field approximately five days before the event, creating a festive atmosphere. Detailed programme announcements are expected soon.

This year marks the first time the Penang State Christmas Celebration will be held in Butterworth and the fourth time in Seberang Perai. Previous celebrations were often hosted at iconic locations such as Fort Cornwallis or the Esplanade on Penang Island.

In recent years, the organisers have adopted a plan to alternate the celebration between Penang Island and the mainland, fostering greater community participation and inclusivity.

The theme for the 2024 celebration, “Tidings of Great Joy,” captures the true essence of Christmas — spreading joy, hope, and love.
