THE Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) is gathering feedback from residents living in Seberang Perai over the possibility that the council might be upgraded to a city council.

MPSP president Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the council would like to listen to the views of the people and understand their sentiments should the council be given an ‘upgrade’.

“The ideas and views can be shared to MPSP’s Facebook page,” he said.

“Although no announcement was made regarding the matter, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin had mentioned it a few times at different functions.

“Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo had also spoken on the matter.

“Now, the decision on whether MPSP is given the city council status lies with the Cabinet. We have done our part,” Rozali said.

He spoke to reporters after attending a full-council meeting at the MPSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam, today.

The council projected a revenue of RM271.2 million this year. Seberang Perai is the largest municipality in the country, covering about 755,000sq km.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) received its city council status four years back.
