MYANMAR Airways International (MAI) will officially launch its inaugural direct flight from Yangon to Penang on April 10 (tomorrow), marking a historic milestone in regional connectivity.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai hailed the development as the first-ever direct air link by a Myanmar-based airline to Penang.

“This is a proud moment for both regions. The success of this new route is the result of early and collaborative efforts between the Penang government and Myanmar Airways International, initiated last year.
“Today’s launch stands as a testament to the shared vision and commitment between both parties,” Wong said.
Wong underscored Penang’s status as not only a top-tier tourist destination but also Malaysia’s leading hub for medical tourism.
“Every year, hundreds of thousands of international patients come to Penang seeking high-quality and affordable healthcare at our private hospitals.
“Myanmar has already become an important market in this sector, and we see significant potential for further growth,” he said.
He also highlighted Penang’s strengths beyond tourism, noting the state’s robust ecosystem in education, business events, and manufacturing.
“These advantages make Penang a strategic gateway for Myanmar businesses and travellers, opening doors to deeper economic and cultural exchanges between our two regions,” he added.
Wong was speaking during an engagement session with tourism stakeholders held at the Royale Chulan Penang Hotel in Weld Quay today, where he made the announcement about the MAI direct flight to Penang.
Also present were Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan and Global Asia Myanmar managing director Kyaw Bohne Naing.
Wong also proudly pointed to Penang’s expanding international air connectivity, now covering 20 cities across Asia and the Middle East.
“With Yangon becoming our 21st direct destination and Chengdu’s flight set to launch on April 30, Penang’s global connectivity continues to grow, enhancing access to key markets.
“Let us build on this momentum, strengthen the bridge between Yangon and Penang, and work together to foster a more connected and prosperous region,” he said.
