OVER 300 peace lovers from the Sikh community took part in the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ religious parade in George Town to promote world peace.

The Nagar Kirtan, also known as Shabad Chaunki, was held to promote world peace through ‘Kirtan and Simran’ (singing writings of God in poetry).

The parade, organised by Persatuan Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang, was held on Nov 17 in-conjunction with the upcoming 550 years ‘Parkash Dihara’ (birthday) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Joining in the procession were the Malaysian Sikh Band, a traditional Sikh martial art performance group from India and the martial art group Baba Buddha Ji Gatka Akhara from Malaysia.

Devotees paraded from the Wadda Gurdwara to Lebuh Tye Sin, Magazine Road and Penang Road before ending at the Wadda Gurdwara.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, Jelutong MP R.S.N Rayer, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and Gurmit Kaur (the wife of the late veteran DAP leader Karpal Singh) also took part in the parade.
