Navigating unconventionality

THE Malaysian fashion landscape has undergone a remarkable evolution, gaining global recognition through the contributions of emerging designers.

Among them is Gurdip Kaur, a talented individual hailing from Penang, who on Feb 25 earned the Best Fashion Designer Award at New York Couture Fashion Week in Kuala Lumpur.

Having triumphed on the local stage, Gurdip is now poised to represent Malaysia at Couture Fashion Week in New York next year.

Despite facing challenges as an unconventional designer, she is determined to showcase Malaysia uniquely.

Gurdip seeks the support of generous donors or sponsors to fund her journey to New York and realise her dream on the grandest stage.

Inspired by Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, Gurdip’s sustainable fashion creations blend unconventional materials, inviting both admiration and uniqueness.

“My creations embody sustainable fashion, as the designs are meticulously crafted to allow for versatile combinations with various materials.

“Although some may perceive my style as unconventional, peculiar, or divergent from Malaysian norms, there exists a dedicated audience appreciating the unique essence of my work,” she said.

Her award-winning collection in Kuala Lumpur, titled ‘Punkature: An Ode to Queen V,’ pays homage to the late Queen Victoria and Vivienne Westwood, the ‘Queen of Punk.’
