PENANG’S tourism and hospitality industry continues to flourish with the opening of a new hotel in the heart of George Town and an array of colourful events lined up before the year-end.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, officiating the opening of Saturn Hotel by Qravel at Abu Siti Lane, hailed the new establishment as a boost for the state’s tourism sector.
“The hotel’s opening signifies progress and reinforces Penang’s position as a leading destination.
“Penang is experiencing a surge in visitors as the year-end approaches, driving growth in the local hospitality industry and other related sectors,” Wong said.
“The concluded Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta in Straits Quay attracted more than 100,000 participants. The regatta served as a vibrant platform to showcase Penang’s rich multicultural heritage and stunning natural beauty,” he said.
Over this weekend, Wong is looking forward to the much-anticipated Penang Bridge International Marathon on Dec 15, to be held for the first time in Batu Kawan.
“With over 22,000 participants, this annual international event is poised to act as a catalyst for Penang’s tourism sector,” Wong remarked.
Capping off the year on a high note, the famous Penang Chingay Parade will take place in Butterworth on Dec 21 and George Town on Dec 28.
Looking ahead, Wong emphasised the role of the forthcoming Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) in unlocking Penang’s potential as a hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).
“The MICE sector will bring sustained business to local hotels, enhance brand visibility, and elevate standards in the hospitality industry,” Wong stated.
Penang also garnered global recognition in the Michelin Guide 2025, with 69 establishments featured, including two with Michelin stars, 35 Michelin Selected eateries, and 32 Bib Gourmand recipients.
