RAMAKRISHNA Ashrama, a charitable organisation providing care and education for needy children in Jalan Scotland, today took a step forward in embracing digitalisation after announcing the opening of a new information and communications technology (ICT) lab there.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo commended the orphanage for taking such an important step towards preparing the children for the competitive and digitally-driven 21st century today.

“When we talk about our children, we also talk about their future. When we say future, we must think of ways to equip them with important skills so that they could stay relevant in today’s fast-moving world influenced by the emergence of digitalisation.

“Ramakrishna Ashrama has always been very close to my heart and it will continue to be so.

“I am truly happy and excited to see all of you, especially the committee members, teachers and parents alike playing a key role to prepare the children for the future.

“I came here today to announce an allocation of RM10,000 for the ICT lab but I have changed my mind to double the figure to RM20,000.

“It is hoped the allocation will be helpful to assist the home in maintaining the ICT lab, while upgrading important facilities from time to time to accommodate the needs of the children’s education,” Jagdeep said in his speech during the official opening ceremony of the ICT lab at the orphanage in Jalan Scotland today.

Jagdeep, who is also Datok Keramat assemblyman, had earlier made a contribution of RM15,000 for the setting up of the lab.

Meanwhile, the orphanage’s deputy president K. Ramasamy, thanked Jagdeep and other generous donors for their contributions to making the ICT lab a reality for the benefit of the children.

Also present was Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Datuk A. Rajendran, who spoke about flood mitigation projects that were materialised in Datuk Keramat and Air Itam.

“We have spent RM7 million in the last three years by introducing several key flood mitigation projects in Datuk Keramat and Air Itam, which include elevating low roads and installing pump houses,” he said.

Later, Jagdeep was taken on a tour to the ICT lab and was seen greeting the children there.
