A NEW Pertubuhan Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) has been established in the Kebun Bunga constituency, making it the second of such facility in the northeast district of Penang island.

This state government initiative aims to provide a dedicated space for the senior citizens to engage in daily activities and social interactions.

State Social Development, Non-Religious, and Welfare Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim lauded the setting up of the centre in Rifle Range, highlighting its pivotal role in addressing the state’s growing elderly population.

“Currently, we have nine PAWE centres in Penang, offering senior citizens a place for leisure activities.

“Our goal is to enhance their well-being and provide better care. PAWE is seen as a vital pillar in supporting the elderly community,” she said during the event.

She said that various outreach programmes had been implemented, including Sukarelawan Mutiara, which encourages community involvement, along with targeted aid initiatives.

She expressed her hope for greater participation in PAWE programmes to foster a more inclusive society.

During the event, Lim also acknowledged the contributions of the ageing community, especially in managing their households.

Meanwhile, Kebun Bunga assemblyman Lee Boon Heng shared his concerns over the increasing number of elderly-related sudden deaths in Rifle Range, citing three such cases since he was elected.

“This is alarming, and we must address the challenges of an ageing population effectively.

“The new PAWE centre provides a dedicated space for the senior citizens to carry out their daily routines,” Lee said, thanking the state government for selecting Rifle Range for the initiative.
