A CHICKEN storage and distribution centre in Batu Lanchang is expected to be completed by March next year.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the centre is now 97 per cent complete and the council would undertake the remaining works by next month.

“We had earlier appointed a company for the build-operate-transfer (BOT) plan in November 2019, but the company’s contract has been terminated due to certain factors.

“The project was initially slated to be wrapped up in March this year.

“Hence, the council will take over the remaining works,” he told reporters after visiting the building in Batu Lanchang today.

Yew said MBPP was in the midst of selecting an operator to take over the chicken operation centre.

“We are now evaluating the proposals received after a request for proposal (RFP) seeking operators was issued on Aug 8 before its closure on Sept 19.

“The appointed operator will take over the operation here,” he said, adding there are a total of 226 car parks, including the disabled parking lots as well as other public amenities.

Yew expressed hopes that awareness of hygiene can be raised with the construction of the centre.
