A FIVE-star public toilet at the market and hawker food complex in Lengkok Tenggiri, Seberang Jaya, is officially open today.

Seberang Jaya assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin said the upgrading project started on July 16 last year and was fully completed on Dec 21.

“The project was undertaken by Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) with a total cost of RM161,750.

“The new public toilet also is equipped with a durable and high-quality stainless steel door, a motion sensor light, a water-saving toilet flush, a ‘photocell’ system that uses the surrounding light and an OKU toilet for the disabled.

“And one of the best parts is that the public does not have to pay a fee to use it,” Dr Afif said in his speech before taking part in the launching ceremony in Lengkok Tenggiri at Seberang Jaya today.

Also present were state Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, MBSP mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud and MBSP secretary Rosnani Mahmod.

Dr Afif, who is also the state Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman, also announced the upgrading work of Lengkok Tenggiri food court.

“The open tender process will start as early as next month involving 44 units of food stall.

“Thus, I hope this project will provide a more comfortable food court for the hawkers and visitors here,” he added.

Meanwhile, according to Rozali, a total of 465 public toilets in Seberang Perai were inspected and evaluated in December last year.

“From this number, 220 public toilets have been rated between four- and five-star while another 245 public toilets were rated three-star and below.

“I know that we can achieve a much better result than this and thus by 2022, MBSP aims for the 465 public toilets to achieve between four- and five-star ratings in Seberang Perai.

“At the same time, I would like to remind the public to take care of our public toilets’; cleanliness because our toilets are a reflection of what kind of society we are,” Rozali said.
