THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated new shop units to three traders to enable them to continue their businesses at the Taman Terubong Jaya market and food complex in Paya Terubong.
MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang said the old shop units within the same market were in a deteriorated state due to recurring water overflow issues caused by grease traps in each of the three units.
“As a result, it causes discomfort to the traders and also the market-goers.
“The city council has then relocated all three traders to the new shop units after spending approximately RM46,000 on refurbishment.
“We hope with the new shop units, they can now conduct their businesses comfortably,” she told a press conference at the market today.
Taman Terubong Jaya market and food complex, which started its operation in 2019, has been the main hub for Paya Terubong folk to get their daily necessities.
Also present during the press conference was MBPP councillor Rohaizat Hamid.
One of the traders, Tan Theam Lye, 58, expressed his deep appreciation to MBPP for solving their problems.
“This water overflow problem started in 2021. It did not happen regularly but when it did, it affected our businesses as the customers would not enter our shops because of the overflow water.
“Nevertheless, the problem is solved now, and I no longer have to worry about it. Thank you once again to MBPP,” he said.
