CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow lauded the Malaysian Tamilar Kural for uplifting the livelihood of the underprivileged community in Penang and Malaysia.
He also commended the non-governmental organisation’s president David Marshel for attending to the needs of the society, especially the Indian community.
“He is not only playing his role as a councillor of the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), but is also actively involved in several community-based organisations, championing various social, economic and human rights issues.
“The NGO is based in Penang, but it also cares for the wellbeing of the needy community in neighbouring states.
“I believe that the Malaysian Tamilar Kural and its president can achieve more and touch many more lives,” Chow said in his speech during a fundraising dinner, organised by the NGO, today.
Chow said he was told that the organisation hoped to purchase a building in Taman Indrawasih to be used as an administrative centre.
The building will also be used to hold community outreach programmes and to provide shelter for the marginalised society.
“The NGO’s intention will complement the state’s effort in reaching out to the less privileged.
“The state government can do more for the needy community with the support received from the NGOs such as the Malaysian Tamilar Kural.
Chow pledged to contribute RM20,000 on behalf of the state government.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P Ramasamy who was also present said that the Malaysian Tamilar Kural is a NGO that passionately voices out the needs of Tamil community in the country.
