Night market traders and hawkers need at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine before resuming business, says MBPP mayor

THE night market hawkers and traders who wish to resume operations are required to receive at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine, says Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.

Yew urged them to take part in the Community Vaccine Mobilisation (Movak) programme which caters to all hawkers and traders registered under MBPP.

It was learnt that the programme will take place at two locations on the island, namely City Stadium and Dewan Perda in Teluk Kumbar, starting from August 30 to September 2.

“Since the National Security Council has given the approval for night market hawkers and traders to resume businesses, we want them to seize the opportunity by participating in the programme.

“We hope that these hawkers and traders will get their Covid-19 jabs before they start operating on Sept 15,’’ said Yew during the virtual full board council meeting today.

Yew also hoped that a total of 38 night markets involving 800 operators and workers would adhere to strict compliance of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) upon the reopening of their business.

Apart from that, he also reminded all parties to be more responsible following the loosening of economic activities for various sectors.

Business operators and customers are reminded to be responsible to ensure everyone’s safety

“Let it be the business operators or customers, be responsible to ensure safety for all. The MBPP will be working together with the police to enforce the SOPs.

“If anyone fails to do so, we will take stern action against them,” he added.

Touching on a separate matter, MBPP councillor Wong Yuee Harng said the MBPP has given a two-year licensing fee exemption for jet ski and winch boat operators in Penang who are affected by the current pandemic.

“A total of 24 jet ski and winch boat operators are exempted from paying their licensing fee for two years that totalled up to RM16,600.

Water sports activities which used to draw many tourists to the shore of Batu Ferringhi are now affected due to the pandemic

“The exemption is done at a rate of RM100 for each jet ski and winch boat unit that the operators own,” he added.
