THE Northern Heart Hospital (NHH), the first and only dedicated cardiac and vascular specialist hospital in Penang and the northern region of Malaysia, officially opened its doors today to serve both local and international patients.
Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak officiated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art facility, located on Peel Avenue, Pulau Tikus.
The ceremony was graced by prominent figures, including Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, NHH chairman Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz, NHH chief executive officer Kelen Leong Choy Fun and NHH consultant cardiologist Dr Tan Chiang Soo.
NHH aims to provide specialised and comprehensive care for patients with cardiovascular conditions, offering a wide array of advanced cardiac, vascular, and cardiothoracic diagnostic and treatment services.

The hospital’s dedicated team of specialists, allied health professionals, and nurses are committed to delivering evidence-based, patient-centric care to achieve the best possible outcomes.
In his keynote address, Gooi highlighted the transformative impact of NHH on healthcare in Penang and Malaysia as a whole.
“The launch of the Northern Heart Hospital marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of cardiovascular care in Penang and Malaysia.
“This facility not only enhances our ability to address complex cardiac conditions locally but also solidifies Penang’s standing as a premier destination for medical tourism,” he said.
Gooi emphasised the synergy between healthcare and tourism, stating that Penang’s blend of world-class medical expertise and cultural charm attracts patients from across Southeast Asia.
“Our patients will receive exceptional cardiac care while enjoying Penang’s breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage.
“This integration not only improves patient experiences but also strengthens our tourism industry, further embedding healthcare into the local economy,” he added.
He also said the benefits of NHH extend far beyond its medical services.
Gooi underscored the hospital’s contributions to local industries, from hospitality to retail, and noted Penang’s leading role in Malaysia’s medical tourism sector.
“Penang accounts for 45% of Malaysia’s medical tourism revenue as of 2024, a remarkable achievement that positions us as a leader in this field.
“The arrival of international patients will invigorate related sectors, create job opportunities, and enhance Penang’s reputation as a global healthcare hub,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2025, Gooi expressed optimism for sustained growth in medical tourism, anticipating an increase in patient numbers and revenue.
Meanwhile, Leong echoed these sentiments, describing the hospital’s vision for the future of healthcare.
“Today’s launch is a proud milestone for the Northern Heart Hospital as we reaffirm our dedication to addressing cardiovascular health challenges in the region.
“By prioritising patient-centred care, pioneering treatments, and fostering collaborations, we aim to set new standards in cardiovascular care,” she said.
Leong also highlighted NHH’s unique operating model, where specialists are partners in the hospital, ensuring personalised, high-quality care for every patient.
“With this collaborative approach, we strive to deliver exceptional outcomes for both local and international patients,” she concluded.
