INSTILLING obedience, self-discipline, and self-respect in primary school pupils and developing them into leaders of exemplary character has become an integral aspect of SJK (C) Min Sin’s Tunas Kadet Remaja Sekolah (TKRS) routine.

Established in 2017 with only handful of students, TKRS has evolved into a prominent uniformed movement at the school in Bukit Jambul.

Over the past six years, TKRS, under the guidance of teacher-in-charge Ang Aik Fung, has shone brightly by achieving numerous accolades.

TKRS’s achievements include winning the northeast district marching competition, securing the best male and female commander awards and becoming the only Chinese primary school to advance to the state-level championship.

On top of that, TKRS clinched three honours at the national championship in the boys’, girls’ and mixed group marching competitions.

In an exclusive interview with Buletin Mutiara recently, Ang, drawing on his experience as a former commander, emphasised that when he assumed leadership, the TKRS team solely comprised a boys’ platoon.

However, in the past two years, he successfully established a girls’ team, aiming to broaden TKRS’s appeal to upper primary school pupils.

“It was not easy for them when they first joined this uniformed body as they needed to undergo an endurance and hardship training in order to hone their talents.

“Under my guidance, I strive my best to train them. Initially, I would spend about two hours after school session to train them.

“As the pupils became familiar with the basic formations and marching, the training duration was gradually reduced.

“Formations were continuously modified to enhance perfomance. All of the members are self-motivated and strive to improve themselves during the training, which contributed to the overall smoothness of the training process,” he said.

Ang highlighted TKRS’s remarkable feats in the series of marching competitions.

“Prior to attracting the pupils’ interest, we need to show our results to them. Hence, after the boys’ team won one of the marching tournaments in its debut, their success played a pivotal role in establishing TKRS’s credibility among the pupils’,” said Ang.

He also acknowledged the crucial role played by parents in supporting their children’s involvement with TKRS, expressing appreciation for their understanding and encouragement.

“It was not easy for the parents as they needed to arrange transportation for their children,” he added.

Ang also commended school principal Chew Eng Hock for his commitment and unwavering support for TKRS.

Recipocrating the appreciation, Chew praised Ang’s dedication and sacrifices to TKRS.

“Previously, only the boys’ team existed, but thanks to Ang, the formation of the girls’ team took place. To become TKRS members, the pupils must cultivate the willpower to thrive in this environment.

“TKRS currently boasts over 80 members, and their uniforms were sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association.”

Meanwhile, Khoo Yu Rui, 11, told Buletin Mutiara that it was an honour for her to lead the girls’ platoon.

“Since joining TKRS, I have built my self-confidence to work independently. My parents play a pivotal role by supporting my participation in this uniform body.

“I managed to arrange my time well by balancing my studies and co-curricular activities,” she said, expressing hope for increased participation from upper primary school pupils in TKRS.

Jun Kuan, 11, stressed the importance of teamwork for success in TKRS.

“We need to collaborate as a team and guide our platoon to greater heights through our collective hard work,” said Jun Kuan, who is the boys’ team commander.
