WHEN words got out that national shuttler Chan Peng Soon would be present at Prangin Mall, avid badminton lovers thronged the mall to catch a glimpse of the badminton hero.
Despite being held on a working day, the opening of the ‘Fiesta Sukan Untuk Semua Pulau Pinang 2019’ drew a huge crowd.
The fiesta starts today until Dec 8.
State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee expressed hope that the 2016 Olympic silver medallist could set up a badminton academy to pass down his skills to the younger generation.
The fiesta (from 11am to 9pm) is set to draw thousands of people throughout the event.
Sports enthusiasts will be able to purchase sports equipment at attractive prices. There are also other exciting activities lined up, such as badminton activation and badminton competition for youth (Under-12 and Under-17).
Badminton fans must not miss the chance to interact with some professional badminton players, scheduled to be held on Dec 7 and 8 in Prangin Mall.
On a separate matter, Soon said a badminton workshop would be held at the Dewan Sri Bagan Jermal, starting tomorrow (Dec 3).
Soon said the workshop is held to expose children below 12 to the techniques of playing badminton.
“We are holding the workshop during the school holidays.
“I hope that more state constituencies will hold similar workshop to encourage children to take up sports,” Soon, who is the Bagan Jermal assemblyman, said.
He said that sports is the best way for anyone to stay fit and healthy.
Chan, Soon, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi demonstrated their badminton skills after the opening ceremony.
