FINISHER medals, in the unique shape of the Penang island and mainland, will be given out to qualifiers of the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2019 on Nov 24.
PBIM chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the medal’s shape was inspired by the state’s physical shape and its aspiration for balanced development.
“I draw inspiration from the state vision to promote Penang as a state that consists of both the island and mainland, which have to be developed as a whole,” Yeoh, who is also the state Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman, said in a press conference in Komtar today.
“The two stripes across the Penang Bridge icon on the medal reflects the colours of the state flag which interestingly glow in the dark.
“The lanyards are of three different colours – purple (10km run), light blue (half marathon) and pink (full marathon).”
Also present were the PBIM project director Grace Teoh and committee member Ketty Ooi.
Yeoh said only participants who completed their race within their respective qualifying time at 7 hours (full marathon), 3 hours 30 mins (half marathon) and 1.5 hours (10km) would be eligible for the finisher medal.
Yeoh also said this year would be the last year for the 10km run. Last year, the full marathon and half marathon were held before bad weather forced the organisers to cancel the 10km.
He added that his office, PETACH, was working on rebranding PBIM as an international marathon of quality instead of quantity.
Entries for the run close on July 31. To date, 22,000 runners from 50 countries have registered with 4,000 for the full marathon, 7,000 for the half marathon and 11,000 for the 10km run.
