THE long-anticipated Package Two bypass road project, linking Bandar Baru Air Itam to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, is progressing ahead of schedule, bringing hope for smoother traffic flow in Penang.

According to state Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, the project had reached 73% completion as of Feb 28, a milestone that reflects efficient execution and seamless coordination among stakeholders.

During a site visit to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Gelugor, Zairil led a delegation of key authorities to inspect the installation of massive beams, a crucial phase of the elevated road construction.

“We are installing some of the longest beams at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, each weighing a staggering 140 tonnes,” he shared.

A total of six beams will be positioned at this section, with three supporting each side of the carriageway.

Similar installations are scheduled for other key sections, including Jalan Bukit Gambir.

With the project moving ahead of its initial timeline, it is expected to be ready by 2026.

However, he emphasised the importance of prioritising public safety.

“While we are ahead of schedule, I urge contractors to ensure safety remains the top priority.

So far, I am satisfied with the progress,” he told Buletin Mutiara during the site visit.

Acknowledging the impact on residents, Zairil encouraged the public, especially those in affected areas, to stay updated on road closures and alternative routes through social media and news portals.

Meanwhile, project director Asward Indra Firhad explained the next steps following the beam installation.

Contract workers are fixing the netting below the beams.

“Once the beams are in place, we will proceed with netting and deck slab works.

“These elements are vital for structural support and to prevent debris hazards, ensuring the safety of road users,” he said.

The RM851.04 million Package Two project will drastically cut travel time, reducing the 40-minute drive between Bandar Baru Air Itam and Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to just 10 minutes.

Consortium Zenith Construction (CZC) is undertaking the project, which is being implemented by the Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC).

It comprises three interchanges – Interchange One (at Lebuhraya Thean Teik), Interchange Two (Jalan Bukit Gambir-Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah) and Interchange Three (at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway), which would involve a left in-left out junction and an elevated U-turn.

Accompanying Zairil on the site visit were Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng and Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus.
