Padang Kota service centre’s legal advice programme to recommence next week

AFTER pausing for two years, the Padang Kota Service centre will be resuming its ‘Legal Night Aid’ programme from next week.

The programme, which was launched in January 2019, was discontinued during the movement control order (MCO) period.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the programme is run by three young enthusiastic lawyers who are keen to contribute to society.

“When we first started the programme, we only had one legal adviser that is Alan Lim (Penang Island City Council councillor).

“Now, two more legal advisers have joined the programme.

“This team of young people desires to contribute to the wellbeing of the community via its legal advice service,” said Chow during the announcement on the resumption of the legal advice programme.

Chow said at the same time, his service centre will also be resuming its night services (every first, second and third Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 9pm)

Apart from that, Chow said the Padang Kota Service centre would be also resuming its night services next week.

“The ‘Legal Night Aid’ is set to resume every first, second and third Wednesday of each month from 7pm to 9pm.

“At the same time, our service centre will also be resuming its night services (every first, second and third Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 9pm),” Chow said.

Meanwhile, Lim advised the public to stay alert to scam calls and not fall into them.

“I would like to tell the public not to entertain any calls saying that they are from the Income Tax office, Bank Negara or other government authorities.

“These organisations would normally send out letters to the public on whatsoever urgent matters that they need to inform their respective customers,” he said.

The programme’s new member, Fong Sau  Choun said he was happy to be part of the legal advice team.

“The public sometimes tends to get involved with serious matters without getting proper advice.

“So, we hope to create awareness of this legal advice service.

“With this service, we hope we can help our community, especially the vulnerable ones,” he said.

Another team member, Koay Ee Teng said many people do not know where to seek legal advice, therefore the service centre would be a suitable place for them to seek help.

“We provide legal advice for free and they need to make appointments for the consultation.

Koay

“I also would like to thank Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his team for having us in the programme,” Koay added.

Lau Keng Ee, who is Chow’s special affairs officer in Padang Kota, said the centre is planning to organise online and physical programmes related to the scams as well as the legal advice service provided by the centre.
