ONE HUNDRED bold and brave individuals on April 21 gathered for a compassionate cause, courageously shaving their heads in a show of tremendous support and love for cancer patients in need.
Called the 100 Gutsty Bald, the fundraiser went on to raise more than RM600,000 surpassing the initial target of RM200,000.
Organised by Penang Adventist Hospital, the event aimed to raise funds for the hospital’s Cancer Fund, which is used to assist cancer patients from underprivileged families.
The 100 participants from diverse backgrounds and ages, included notable faces from the hospital, such as group president Ronald Koh, chief executive officer Albin Phua and charity fund committee member Dr Khor Chai Tian.
State Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim commended the hospital for the head-shaving event, coinciding with its 100th-anniversary celebrations this year.
“I am deeply honoured to be among you for this charity event.
“This event is not just about 100 participants shaving their hair; it’s about solidarity, support and making a tangible difference in our community.
“Your presence here today is a testament to the strength of our community and our shared commitment to helping others,” Lim said in her speech during the 100 Gutsy Bald charity event at Gurney Plaza on April 21.
Meanwhile Phua, in his speech, expressed his gratitude to the participants for their tremendous support since the idea was first mooted. The event was last held within the hospital’s premises in 2017.
“Let’s be honest, regardless of gender, going bald isn’t easy for all.
“It is a symbol of vulnerability, of shedding our outer layers and embracing our inner strength.
“Tonight, we come together from different walks of life, with different stories to tell, but with one common purpose, which is to stand together and fight alongside those battling cancer,” Phua said in his speech.
He also went on to thank venue sponsor Gurney Plaza and all other partners that have contributed to the success of this event.
