A PROJECT, called ‘Love in the Community’, was launched by Paya Terubong assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin at the Sri Aman Food Court today to benefit the needy, especially low-income families, the elderly who live alone, the disabled and underprivileged students.
Yeoh, who is also the state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, said the project was a collaboration between his service centre and Sri Aman Food Court to ensure that the vulnerable group was not cut off from food supply during this difficult period.
He handed free coupon books to several recipients from the B40 group at the food court after receiving 100 coupon books from the food court manager Lee Guan Cheng.
Each coupon book has coupons worth RM2, RM5 and RM10 amounting to RM60.
“Most hawkers have lost their source of income due to the implementation of the movement control order which does not allow ‘dine-in’ activities.
“At the same time, the economic position of families affected due to the unstable pandemic situation in our country is increasing.
“Therefore I hope that the project can help both parties and achieve a two-pronged approach, which is to help the 38 hawkers and local community.
“Recipients can use the coupons to buy food and beverages at Sri Aman Food Court during the period from July 1 to Sept 30,” Yeoh said.
He added that social service organisations, volunteer teams and the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) have done verification work to ensure the coupons are distributed to those who really need them.
Members of the MPKK Relau, MPKK Sri Relau and MPKK Lebuh Relau were present to assist in the event today. Also present was the area’s penghulu, Nasrizal Nasib.
Yeoh said he would continue to work to get more resources and increase the number of coupon books to benefit more parties affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to the project, he said his Paya Terubong service centre also provides assistance to the local community such as through Mutiara Food Bank.
Lee thanked Yeoh for the launching the initiative which would help the needy as well as boost the business for the hawkers at his food court.
“This is a very good community effort and a win-win situation for both the recipients and the hawkers here.
“As the food court operator, I am also promoting the initiative by selling the book coupon worth RM60 for RM50 to those who want to purchase it,” Lee said.
