THE iconic Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge served as the backdrop for the highly anticipated Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2024, drawing a record-breaking 22,000 participants from 64 countries and regions.

This year’s event not only shattered attendance records but also marked a pivotal milestone in Penang’s journey toward becoming a global sports tourism hub.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the event’s strategic importance, stating that the successful hosting of PBIM underscores Penang’s emergence as a prime destination for tourism and international events.

“Anchored in our Penang2030 vision, we are committed to making Penang a world-class destination not only for travellers but also for sports enthusiasts,” Chow said.

He stressed the marathon’s profound economic impact, noting its role in boosting local businesses and fostering community engagement.

“With robust infrastructure and immense growth potential, Batu Kawan is well-positioned to host large-scale international events, further strengthening our economy and securing Penang’s place on the global map,” he remarked during the marathon’s closing ceremony this morning.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai described PBIM 2024 as especially meaningful, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Second Penang Bridge.

“This event is not just about athletic achievement – it celebrates the unity of a global community and countless personal success stories,” he said.

Wong credited the event’s success to meticulous planning and the unwavering support of sponsors, partners, and government agencies.

“PBIM 2024 was more than a marathon; it was a celebration of culture, resilience, and community spirit,” he noted.
