THE Penang Billiard and Snooker Association (PBSA) has set its sight on establishing an academy following the success of its national champions Lim Kok Leong and Moh Keen Hoo in local and international competitions.

Kok Leong, 28, was adjudged the Penang Sportsman of the Year during the recent Penang State Sports Award 2019-2022. He also received the best team award together with Keen Hoo.

In October last year, the duo clinched the World Team Snooker Championship in Kuala Lumpur and a month later, Kok Leong made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win the World Amateur Snooker Championship in Antalya, Turkey.

PBSA president Datuk Michael Tan congratulated them on their remarkable achievements.

“They deserved the recognition given by the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP). I am confident that the awards will inspire them to continue performing at their best in the future,” he said.

“We hope to set up a snooker and billiard academy centre in Bayan Baru, pending assistance from the authorities.

“Establishing an academy is important for us to nurture more snooker and billiards talents for the state and country.”

Kok Leong expressed his delight in receiving the award, admitting that it was completely unexpected.

“I need to thank the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) for nominating me as the best men’s athlete.

“And I am also grateful for the unforgettable moment I shared with my partner, Keen Hoo,” said the soft-spoken Kok Leong, who mentioned that he would utilise the prize money received from the double honours for the benefit of his family.

As for Keen Hoo, he has yet to decide how he will spend the prize money but is determined to train even harder in the future.
