THE Penang Development Corporation (PDC) marked its 55th anniversary today with a celebration that highlighted its impressive track record in driving socio-economic development and strengthening the state’s economic landscape.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, speaking at the event held at the PDC headquarters in Bayan Lepas, commended PDC’s numerous initiatives that have contributed significantly to the state’s progress and positioned it as a key investment destination in Malaysia.
During his speech, Chow outlined several notable milestones achieved by PDC in 2024.
Among the highlights was the completion of the GBS TechSpace building, the fourth global business services (GBS) facility developed by PDC, which received its Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) in late August.
With 60,000sq ft of rentable space, the project aligns with the state’s ‘Penang Silicon Design @5km+’ initiative aimed at attracting investments and nurturing the integrated circuit (IC) design sector. The facility, located at the Technoplex Bayan Lepas industrial park, is set to enhance talent retention and economic opportunities in Penang, with a formal inauguration planned for Dec 7.
Another major project nearing completion is the GBS By The Sea building, which has reached 98.9% construction completion as of Nov 1 this year. This third GBS facility, spanning 294,000sq ft of rentable space, is expected to secure its CCC in early December, further expanding Penang’s capacity to host global business operations.
Chow also highlighted PDC’s pivotal role in developing industrial parks to attract and accommodate high-value investments.
Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 (BKIP3) and the Bandar Cassia Technology Park (BCTP) are currently witnessing robust progress, with several multinational corporations (MNCs) commencing construction in these strategic hubs.
Notably, Siliconware Precision Malaysia, Plexus Manufacturing, and MKS Instruments are among the companies developing new facilities in BCTP, reinforcing Penang’s commitment to clean and sustainable industrial growth.
“PDC has been the backbone of Penang’s socio-economic transformation for over five decades.
“Through strategic investments and innovative initiatives, it has attracted diverse domestic and foreign investments, created thousands of jobs, and strengthened the state’s infrastructure.
“This success not only elevates the quality of life for Penangites but also solidifies Penang’s reputation as a preferred destination for investors and businesses,” Chow said.
In addition to infrastructure and investment successes, the Chief Minister lauded PDC for fostering social harmony and inclusivity, particularly through community initiatives.
The event, which also celebrated Deepavali, underscored Penang’s multicultural spirit and commitment to unity under the Penang2030 vision of a more inclusive and prosperous society.
As PDC enters its 56th year, the Chief Minister expressed optimism about its continued impact on Penang’s growth trajectory, citing ongoing projects and the corporation’s strategic roadmap for 2024 to 2028.
He extended his gratitude to PDC’s leadership and staff for their tireless dedication and urged them to continue working toward creating a more sustainable and inclusive state.
“Let us work together to achieve even greater heights, driven by the spirit of unity and dedication.
“Happy Deepavali and congratulations to PDC on this remarkable milestone,” Chow concluded.
PDC Hindu Assocciation chairman N. Puveneswary said the Deepavali festival holds profound meaning, symbolising the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and hope over despair.
“The essence of Deepavali reminds us of the enduring power of light to conquer even the darkest moments, a sentiment that resonates deeply within our communities.
She stressed that PDC has played a significant role not only in the physical development of the state but also in uplifting the socio-economic well-being of its people.
“Through their tireless efforts, PDC has helped transform Penang into a thriving, inclusive state that we are all proud to call home.
“I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to PDC for their unwavering support and the generous allocation that made today’s event possible.
“I am also pleased to share that as part of our celebration, we have extended a corporate social responsibility (CSR) contribution of RM500 each to six Tamil primary schools in Penang. The six schools were SJK(T) Rajaji, SJK(T) Sungai Ara, SJK(T) Azad, SJK(T) Ladang Prye, SJK(T) Ladang Juru, and SJK(T) Ladang Batu Kawan.
“This gesture reflects our shared commitment to fostering education and empowering our next generation.
“To our committee members who worked tirelessly to bring this celebration to life, I extend my sincere appreciation. Your dedication and hard work have made this event truly meaningful,” she added.
The celebration was further enlivened by the vibrant performance of the talented Zubir Khan, who took to the stage with a selection of his popular hits.
With boundless energy, Zubir opened his set with ‘Yennode Macha’, instantly captivating the audience and setting an electrifying tone for the afternoon.
The upbeat rhythm and catchy lyrics had attendees clapping along, creating a festive atmosphere that perfectly embodied the spirit of Deepavali.
As the afternoon continued, Zubir performed ‘Deepavali Sudah Mari’, a song that resonated with the joyous occasion. His powerful vocals and infectious enthusiasm brought a wave of cheer, making it a memorable highlight of the event.
