THE historic and cultural ties between Penang and Chennai have been further strengthened by a strategic tourism initiative aimed at boosting cross-border travel and economic opportunities.
In conjunction with IndiGo Airlines’ recent launch of a direct flight between Penang and Chennai, a delegation of media representatives from prominent Malaysian newspapers and online news platforms embarked on a curated visit to Chennai.
Spearheaded by the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), the initiative aims to position Chennai as a must-visit destination for Penangites while enhancing tourism collaboration between the two regions.

The delegation received a warm welcome in Chennai, where they explored some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Among the highlights was a visit to Mahabalipuram, a Unesco World Heritage Site famed for its ancient rock-cut temples and intricate sculptures that stand as a testament to India’s rich historical and artistic legacy.
The itinerary also included Kanchipuram, a city renowned for its magnificent temples and world-famous silk weaving tradition.
Leading the delegation was Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, who is also a director at PCEB, alongside PCEB chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran.

During a media conference in Chennai, Wong reaffirmed the Penang government’s full support for the cross-tourism promotion initiative, emphasising the state’s commitment to strengthening connectivity with Chennai and fostering closer ties through tourism and trade.
“The introduction of direct flights presents an incredible opportunity for both destinations to grow together.
“By promoting two-way tourism, we are not just boosting travel numbers but also fostering cultural exchange and business collaborations,” Wong said.
Meanwhile, Ashwin highlighted the role of media in amplifying Chennai’s appeal to Malaysian travellers, ensuring that the new air route flourishes.

“Through strategic media exposure, we aim to spotlight Chennai’s vast tourism offerings while reinforcing Penang’s standing as a regional hub for both business and leisure,” he said.
Ashwin also underscored how this initiative aligns with Penang’s long-term tourism strategy, stating that enhanced regional connectivity will unlock economic benefits for both destinations.

“By promoting this route, we are not only encouraging travel but also creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural engagement,” he added.
With direct connectivity now in place, stakeholders from both Penang and Chennai are optimistic about a new era of tourism growth and collaboration, paving the way for stronger people-to-people ties and a more vibrant travel experience between Malaysia and India.
