PENANG and Sweden are looking at ways to collaborate and engage in joint programmes and activities to raise awareness of sustainable operations and sustainability.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Malaysia Dr Joachim Bergstrom said there is a huge potential for Sweden and Penang to collaborate.

“We hope to deepen ties with Penang. We have a few Swedish companies in the state which are very strong in sustainable operation.

“They have turned sustainability into a sales factor. They proved to the world that it is possible to be economically feasible, strong, and viable and at the same time care for the future by sustainably doing things.

“On a personal note, I am a historian by training, and I have known Penang for quite some time.

“This is my first visit to the state, and it has exceeded my expectation,” he said while paying a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in Komtar today.

Dr Bergstrom said he tried to reduce his carbon footprint during his official visit to Penang.

“I took a train from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, and I brought a bicycle with me. Then, I took a ferry to Penang island and I cycled to my hotel.

“I travel with my bicycle when I am here,” he said.

Dr Bergstrom said it is important to raise awareness and to educate the young about sustainability.

“School is an important area to start projects such as recycling and waste management with youths and students,” he said.

Chow welcomed the prospect of collaboration and sharing of knowledge.

He also welcomed Dr Bergstrom to the renowned George Town Festival.

“The George Town Festival is a platform which involved many diverse countries.

“We enjoy the participation of many countries over the years, sharing their cultures, arts, and performances,” Chow said.
