PENANG inventor Cheah Bok Eng, 41, has been officially awarded the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) certificate as a Malaysian inventor with the ‘Most Worldwide Patent Grants’.
Cheah received the award from MBR senior record consultant Edwin Yeoh while witnessed by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during the official ceremony in Komtar today.
Cheah, who is also the signal integrity engineer at Intel Microelectronics Sdn Bhd, achieved a total of 167 ‘Worldwide Patent Grants’ from 13 countries across the globe as of November this year.
Among them are the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, Russia, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, France, China and Malaysia.
Cheah said his inventions are mainly in semiconductor packaging and interconnect technologies for computing, laptop and mobile device applications.
“So basically, the majority of my inventions are related to computing system interconnects such as advanced semiconductor packaging, printed circuit board (PCB) and cabling design solutions for enhanced user experience,” he told Buletin Mutiara after the ceremony today.
Cheah also expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the state government and MBR for the recognition.
“I am very happy with the award. It is a great honour for me to receive such recognition from MBR.
“I am also blessed to be given the opportunities to work with many world-class and brilliant engineers (many of them are here in Malaysia) over the past 17 years of my career that are foundational to this accomplishment.
“It is also a great pleasure to see how we fellow Malaysians continue to inspire one another to rise above and achieve monumental success in our respective professional fields,” said Cheah, who is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has published over 40 technical papers in the technical subjects of advanced packaging, signal and power integrity.
When asked about motivating factors that lead him towards such accomplishment, Cheah replied that innovation is about problem-solving.
“It is an exciting journey to be part of an equation that solves complex problems and formulate solutions that help improve the way we live and communicate.
“You will never get bored being an engineer or a technopreneur given the pace of technological advancement,” he said.
Chow congratulated Cheah for the meaningful achievement.
“I would like to congratulate Cheah for his successful entry into the MBR as a Malaysian inventor with the ‘Most Worldwide Patent Grants’.
“Cheah’s achievement shows that Malaysians can contribute greatly to this field.
“Hopefully this record will inspire other Malaysian engineers, R&D researchers and students to become innovative in the emerging electronic design and manufacturing industries.
“It is hoped that Cheah’s achievement will create more awareness of the strong presence of the electronic design and development technical community in the state and country, as well as the vast opportunities to contribute to the technology of tomorrow,” said Chow.
