A DIVERSE range of participants, including professionals from various disciplines within the construction and building sector, business representatives, government officials, academics, students, and sustainability advocates thronged the three-day Penang Buildex 2024 here at Setia SPICE Arena.
Since its inception in 2001, Penang Buildex has been a pivotal platform for growth, innovation, and collaboration within the building industry, both in Penang and across the region.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who opened the exhibition today, said the event this year, themed ‘The Building Industry’s Showcase’, exemplifies the industry’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, and advancement in the construction and building sector.
“Penang Buildex 2024 promises to explore the latest trends, technologies, and advancements shaping our industry.
“From smart building solutions to sustainable practices, this event offers a fertile ground for learning, networking, and collaboration among all stakeholders,” he said.
Chow stated that this year’s exhibition in Penang was timely.
“It gathers more than 70 locals and foreign players in the construction industry. The Penang Buildex 2024 also includes various programmes and seminars which will be conducted by industry experts.
“I am happy to note that more than 50% of the exhibitors are from Penang-based companies.
“The exhibition provides opportunities for suppliers and stakeholders in the construction industry to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and forge partnerships that will lead to groundbreaking solutions and advancements,” he said, noting that Penang has recently attracted significant investments, which have contributed to factory and infrastructure development.
He added that Malaysia’s construction industry is projected to achieve a 5.7% annual growth rate between 2025 and 2028.
“I am confident that Penang is poised to lead the nation once again in surpassing these projected expectations,” he said.
Chow also thanked the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce (PCCC) and the Penang Master Builders for making Penang Buildex 2024 a success.
Meanwhile, PCCC president Datuk Seri Hong Yeam Wah said sustainable development has become a crucial focus in the construction industry.
“We must consider how to meet human needs while safeguarding the Earth’s resources.
“This is not only a reflection of our responsibility but also a commitment to future generations,” he said.
Hong also urged the government to prioritise the participation of local contractors when approving large-scale projects.
Penang Master Builders president Datuk Goh Teng Whoo said the occasion marked a significant moment in the construction industry.
“Penang Buildex 2024 is designed to facilitate meaningful interactions and provide a platform for new ideas to flourish,” he added.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Datuk Lim Chee Tong said the Penang Buildex 2024 was a landmark event – the first big reunion in 18 years.
“The construction industry, our beloved powerhouse, is the backbone of our economy.
“From dreaming up designs to laying the last brick, it is all about building not just structures, but futures.
“This sector does not just pave roads and raise roofs; it connects over 150 industries – architects, engineers, designers, planners, builders and contractors, building materials manufacturers and suppliers, and even government agencies and educational institutions.
“As the world changes and technology gets fanciful, we are seeing new challenges and also new shining opportunities.
“This expo is our playground for the latest tech, the smartest ideas, and the best future plans,” he said.
Chee Tong added that the Penang Buildex 2024, from today until June 20, is expected to draw some 50,000 visitors.
Also present were former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Rajendran Anthony.
