IN today’s fast-paced world, mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, especially for school-going children.
Academic pressure, social expectations, and personal challenges can weigh heavily on young minds, affecting their emotional and psychological well-being.
Without proper support, these issues may lead to anxiety, depression, and behavioural problems that impact both academic performance and social interactions.
Recognising the importance of student mental health, Penang Care Society (Penang Care) aims to collaborate with schools in the state to promote emotional and psychological well-being among students.
Penang Care chairman Dr Ngoo Seong Boon said the society plans to meet with the Penang Education Department to offer its expertise and services to schools.
“Penang Care Society serves as a platform that brings together non-governmental organisations, industry associations, and professionals to work alongside the state government in providing support and services to those in need.
“We have 30 association members including D’Home, Befrienders, and Sneham which specialise in mental health.
“Our goal is to complement the needs of both students and schools,” he told Buletin Mutiara during his visit today.
Also present were Penang Care Society treasurer Keng Soo Peng and committee member Ng Jui Boon.
Dr Ngoo stressed that the society and its volunteers are ready to offer their support.
“We want children to know that they are not alone – there are people who care and are willing to help them,” he added.
Keng highlighted the importance of fostering a culture where children feel safe seeking help.
“This initiative can significantly reduce stigma and encourage early intervention for mental health concerns.
“By prioritising mental health in schools, we can nurture a generation of emotionally resilient and confident individuals,” he said.
Ng echoed this sentiment, stressing the need to break the silence and integrate mental health as a fundamental part of a child’s educational journey.
