IN a celebration of Penang’s rich cultural heritage, the State Chinese Penang Association (SCPA) joined hands with George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) to organise the Nyonya Kebaya Hand Embroidery Workshop 2024 on April 27.
The prestigious gathering was graced by the presence of Tan Lean Kee, the esteemed wife of the Penang Chief Minister, who officiated the workshop.
The event unfolded at the function room of The George Penang by the Crest Collection, marking a significant moment in the preservation and promotion of Peranakan culture.
The kebaya, an emblematic attire synonymous with the Nyonya women of Straits-Chinese descent, holds a profound historical significance dating back centuries.
Adorned with intricate embroidery, the kebaya is often accompanied by sarong batik (batik cover), kasut manek (beaded shoes), and kerongsang (brooch), enhancing its allure and elegance.
Nyonya Cecelia Lim shared her unparalleled expertise with 33 participants hailing from Penang and beyond.
Drawing from over five decades of experience, Lim imparted her knowledge on crafting elaborate floral motifs, a hallmark of kebaya embroidery.
“Participants, including Nyonyas and Babas, were captivated by the meticulous process of embroidering vibrant floral patterns.
“With a palette of colours, they transformed plain surfaces into vibrant tapestries of green, yellow, white, pink, and red,” she said.
The workshop served as a labour of love, fostering a renewed appreciation for the timeless artistry encapsulated within the Nyonya kebaya.
As the workshop concluded, the organiser thanked GTWHI for the invaluable support in realising the cultural endeavour.
Also present were GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee, SCPA president Datuk Seri Tan Gin Soon, and SCPA deputy president Datuk Lillian Tong.
