PENANG has long been at the forefront of sustainability efforts, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
At the Green Pinang Awards Presentation Ceremony 2024 at the Penang Harmony Centre on Scotland Road, Chow commended the state’s achievements in sustainable urban planning, renewable energy, and green technology.
“Our state boasts a robust ecosystem of sustainable urban planning projects, renewable energy initiatives, and green technology advancements.

“These achievements are made possible by the collaborative efforts of the government, private sector, and community.
“Yet, as we celebrate tonight’s successes, we must acknowledge that the path to true sustainability requires sustained commitment and effort.
“Thus, it is imperative for all of us – individuals, corporations, and government entities alike to act decisively in addressing these issues,” said Chow in his speech.
Also present during the awards presentation ceremony were state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid and Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan Mei Ling.
The Green Pinang Awards Presentation Ceremony 2024, an annual event organised by the Penang Green Council (PGC), was themed “Shaping the Future of Green Penang”.
Tan underscored the significance of the theme, stating: “This theme encapsulates our collective ambition to create a state where environmental stewardship, economic resilience, and social harmony coexist for the benefit of all.”
She also shared that PGC is advancing education and green practices in workplaces through the Penang Green Office Certification category, which saw 36 offices certified this year – 11 government offices and 25 private offices.
“Congratulations to these offices and organisations for taking the initiative to be at the forefront of positive changes, contributing to a better environment,” she said.
Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) stood out by securing the most awards in the Penang Green Office Certification category.
Other notable winners include Penang Hill Corporation (PHC), Clarivate (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Best Point Electrical Chain Store Sdn Bhd, CSE Sdn Bhd and Eastin Hotel Penang.
Under the Penang Green Incentive category, the recipients include Green Educators’ Workgroup (GREW) and Greatech Integration (M) Sdn Bhd.
In the Food Waste Challenge Incentive category, Flextronics Technology (Penang) Sdn Bhd (Plant 5) was bestowed the award.
Chow extended his congratulations to all winners and encouraged continued leadership in sustainability efforts.
“Your accomplishments represent more than individual milestones; they symbolise our collective progress toward the Penang2030 Vision of ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.’
“Let your actions create a ripple effect, igniting greater awareness and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across communities,” Chow concluded.
