Penang Chefs Association marks 37 years of culinary excellence

THE Penang Chefs Association celebrated its 37th anniversary with a grand event at St Giles The Wembley Hotel in George Town, marking yet another milestone in its journey of culinary excellence and community building.

 

The event was graced by Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who praised the association for its contributions to the state’s renowned culinary scene.

 

In his speech, Wong expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the chefs and industry professionals whose dedication has elevated Penang’s gastronomy to international acclaim.

“Your passion and hard work inspire us all and make Penang a truly extraordinary place.

 

“Tonight, we not only celebrate your achievements but also the vibrant and evolving culinary landscape of Penang, which offers something for everyone,” he said.

 

Wong highlighted Penang’s diverse food culture, from iconic street food to refined dining experiences, as a significant draw for both locals and international visitors.

 

He also proudly shared that Lonely Planet recently named Penang the second-best destination for solo travellers in Southeast Asia, lauding its street food scene, rich local culture, and the heritage charm of George Town.

 

“These accolades reflect the tireless efforts of our chefs and culinary visionaries who continue to put Penang on the global food map,” he added.

 

Wong also touched on the exciting prospects for Penang’s hospitality and culinary sectors, emphasising the development of new hotels and the anticipated opening of the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC).

 

“These establishments will not only enhance our hospitality sector but also create platforms for our chefs to shine, further elevating Penang’s culinary and tourism appeal,” he noted.

 

He also commended events like the Battle of the Chefs, an initiative of the Penang Chefs Association since 1987, for showcasing the state’s culinary talent and drawing international attention.

 

“This prestigious competition attracts over 1,200 chefs and numerous tourists annually, further cementing Penang’s standing as a global culinary destination,” he said.

 

Penang Chefs Association chairman Audee Cheah Phee Lee reflected on the association’s humble beginnings and its remarkable growth over the past 37 years.

“From a small gathering of like-minded culinary enthusiasts, we have grown in leaps and bounds to become a formidable force in the culinary world,” said Cheah.

 

He highlighted the evolution of the Battle of the Chefs, which began with just 60 participants and has grown into an event that attracts over 1,300 chefs.

 

Looking ahead to the competition’s 20th edition in 2026, Cheah announced an ambitious goal of welcoming 2,000 participants from across the globe.

 

“This is a testament to our commitment to excellence and our desire to continually push the boundaries of culinary artistry,” he said.

 

Cheah also extended an open invitation to chefs across Penang to join the association, emphasising the numerous benefits of membership, including networking opportunities, professional growth, and being part of a passionate culinary community.

 

“I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to our supporters, sponsors, and members. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our journey, and I am confident that together, we will continue to achieve even greater heights,” he concluded.

 

The anniversary celebration was attended by other notable figures, including Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) national vice-chairman Datuk Khoo Boo Lim, MAH Penang chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh, and various dignitaries and culinary enthusiasts.

 

The event served as a testament to the association’s enduring legacy and its vital role in shaping Penang’s identity as a culinary paradise.
