PENANG is poised to strengthen its ties with China as this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed his deepest appreciation for the longstanding bilateral ties between the two sides, and he anticipates a surge in Chinese-funded investments in the northern states.
“I believe Penang will attract more investments, thanks to the support from the Consulate-General in Penang. Their efforts in fostering stronger ties between Malaysia and China are truly commendable.
“Penang has always cherished its longstanding relationship with China, and we are committed to nurturing and expanding this partnership for the mutual benefit of our communities.
“For 15 consecutive years, China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner while the country is China’s second-largest trading partner within the Southeast Asia region,” Chow said during the Chinese New Year Reception and Festival of Spring 2024 at Dewan Sri Pinang.
The reception, organised by the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang, coincided with the Chap Goh Meh celebration on the last day of the Chinese New Year.
Chow said he was proud of the visit by two of China’s high-level dignitaries last year, namely China’s Vice-President Han Zheng and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
“These momentous visits mark the significant relations between Malaysia and China,” he said.
On the tourism front, Chow highlighted that Penang welcomed 13,000 Chinese visitors last year. He pointed out that his official visit to Xiamen, China, last year clearly demonstrated the close bond between the two countries.
Chinese Consul-General in Penang, Zhou Youbin, expressed satisfaction with the warm reception from those in attendance.
“The festive atmosphere showcases Malaysia’s distinguishing feature of ethnic harmony and cultural diversity,” he said.
Thousands of spectators at Dewan Sri Pinang were entertained by the captivating stage performances and dances.
Notable attendees present were Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, his consort Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor, and Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee.
