HOSTS Penang emerged as the Under-16 boys’ champions at the 100Plus Interstate Under-12 and Under-16 Team Championships held at the Penang Badminton Hall in Bukit Dumbar today.
The Penang Under-16 boys’ team held their nerves to secure a 2-1 victory over Melaka in the final.
Selangor, however, stole the spotlight at the five-day tournament by claiming two of the four titles, winning both the Under-12 boys’ and girls’ team events. In the finals, the Selangor Under-12 boys’ team defeated Kedah 2-0, while the Selangor Under-12 girls edged out Putrajaya 2-1.
The Under-16 girls’ title went to Perak, who defeated Kuala Lumpur 2-1.
Penang Badminton Association president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak shared that Penang had high hopes for their Under-12 boys’ team, but they fell short.
“I noticed that several teams, like Pahang and Putrajaya, have improved significantly. This is encouraging for the overall development of badminton in the country,” Kah said.
In the Under-16 boys’ final, Kong Wei Xiang gave Penang its first point by defeating Melaka’s Curson Cheng Yu Yang 21-19, 21-16 in the singles match. Melaka then equalised when Ungku Ameer and Syed Harraz triumphed over Khaw Kai Shyang and Low Quan Yin 21-17, 21-18 in a hard-fought boys’ doubles match.
In the decisive second singles, Louis Lee Qi Jun maintained composure to secure the winning point, beating Wan Muhammad Darwisy 21-15, 21-17.
