PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has commended the transformative journey of the Youngsters Basketball Club Penang, which celebrated its 90th anniversary with a grand ceremony at the Han Chiang High School hall.
From humble beginnings, the club has grown into a nationally respected sports organisation, contributing significantly to youth development and sports excellence.
“Ninety years represent the collective efforts and dedication of several generations. This remarkable achievement is the result of the unwavering passion and commitment of every member of this organisation,” Chow said this evening, reflecting on the club’s rich legacy.
He praised the club’s mission of nurturing character through sports, highlighting the role of coaches, pioneers, and volunteers in inspiring generations and producing talented athletes.
“Sports are not only about physical fitness but also about instilling perseverance, resilience, and a proactive attitude.
“These values transcend the sports arena, influencing everyday life and driving personal and societal progress,” he added.
Adding a special touch to the celebration, Chow performed a song during the event, helping to raise RM100,000 for the association. His gesture not only energised the audience but also underscored his commitment to supporting community initiatives.
While celebrating the achievements of the Youngsters Basketball Club, Chow also took the opportunity to address pressing health issues affecting Malaysians. Citing the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey, he expressed concern over the growing prevalence of obesity and being overweight, which affects more than half of the population.
Chow emphasised the need for holistic health awareness, urging Malaysians to adopt a proactive approach to their well-being by balancing fitness enthusiasm with awareness of potential risks during exercise.
He also encouraged the public to understand their health conditions to prevent avoidable emergencies.
Looking ahead, Chow expressed confidence in the club’s ability to adapt to changing times by offering enriched resources and training environments for young athletes.
He invited the club and other organisations to collaborate with the Penang government in promoting health awareness and building healthier communities.
“I am confident that the Youngsters Basketball Club Penang will continue its mission by adapting to the times and ensuring every sports-loving youth finds their path and thrives,” he said.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Penang Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Youngsters Basketball Club Penang chairman Ng Wui Heong, Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) president Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock, and Penang Basketball Association chairman Datuk Ooi Khoon Yeong.
