AT a vibrant Deepavali open house hosted in Bukit Tengah, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised the importance of unity, tolerance, and community welfare, while announcing several impactful initiatives aimed at uplifting underprivileged families.
The highlight of the evening was the distribution of RM100 school uniform vouchers to 100 families from the B40 income group, an initiative led by Ottrumai Bukit Tengah and the Bukit Tengah state constituency office.
The Chief Minister commended the organisers, stating: “This noble effort lightens the burden on less fortunate families and ensures our children, the hope of the nation, have access to equal educational opportunities.”
During his speech at the Perkampungan Juru multipurpose hall this evening, Chow underscored Penang’s commitment to its people, regardless of race or religion, as part of the Penang2030 vision to be a ‘Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.
Reflecting on the state’s recent 2025 Budget, Chow noted that despite achieving the lowest deficit in Penang’s budget history, the government’s dedication to the people’s welfare remains unwavering.
“The Penang government is committed to safeguarding the well-being of our people, especially with the projected increase in revenue next year.
“Our efforts to prioritise the well-being of the people will remain unwavering,” he said.
Chow also highlighted the progress of the Juru-Sungai Dua elevated highway project.
The open house, which showcased the cultural harmony among Penang’s diverse communities, also served as a reminder of the state’s broader aspirations.
Chow encouraged more groups to contribute to community development.
“Programmes like this are crucial in ensuring that education does not become a burden for marginalised groups. I urge more organisations to step forward to help those in need,” he said.
Closing his address with warm wishes for Deepavali, Chow expressed hope for a future filled with peace, love, and harmony in Penang.
“May this Festival of Lights brighten the lives of all Penangites. Together, let us continue to build a state that not only inspires Malaysia but the world,” he added.
Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao-Leung said the Deepavali celebration highlights the triumph of light over darkness, symbolising hope and unity for everyone.
“Although Deepavali has passed, the festive spirit is still alive.
“We must not forget that Penang is truly special because of its diversity of races and religions. Our traditions and culture are a vibrant and living heritage that enriches our shared culture.
“In addition, the Indian community, like other communities in Penang, has played a vital role in the state’s development,” he said.
Also present were Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Penang deputy chairman Datuk Seri K. Pulayantran and organising chairman R. Vickneshwaran.
