THE Penang government has consistently undertaken various water infrastructure projects to benefit consumers.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari (PH-Tanjong Bungah) said the state had allocated significant funds to improve the water system for the people’s welfare.

“The state, through the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), has initiated these efforts to ensure water consumers in the state benefit from improved infrastructure,” Zairil said, speaking on behalf of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during the State Legislative Assembly session today.

Zairil was responding to a question from Abidin Ismail (PN-Sungai Bakap) regarding low water pressure in Mukim 5 of his constituency. Abidin also asked whether the issue was linked to the industrial development in Batu Kawan.

Zairil clarified that low water pressure incidents occurred not only in South Seberang Perai but across Penang.

“For example, there were 2,799 cases in the northeast district, 1,794 in the southwest district, 1,284 in central Seberang Perai, 836 in north Seberang Perai, and 1,060 in south Seberang Perai,” he said.

He dismissed the perception that Batu Kawan’s development was solely responsible, noting that the issue affected the entire state, not just one area.

Zairil also emphasised that the state had not hindered any development on Silicon Island and that such projects would not affect water pressure in the state.
