THE Penang Covid-19 Management Committee will be having a meeting next week to discuss whether there is a need to tighten the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in view of the rising Covid-19 cases recently.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the meeting would be taking the latest situation into account.
“We will inform if there are any updates or changes made to current SOPs,” he said when asked by a reporter on whether the state was planning to make the current SOPs stricter.
Chow was speaking after witnessing the setting up of the Malaysia SpaceTech-Hub following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Angkasa-X and nine Penang-based electrical and electronics companies in Komtar today.
Chow mentioned that the state recorded 544 Delta cases and 37 Omicron cases as of mid of this month.
“It is not that the total cases recorded in the state are solely Omicron,” he said.
On the reopening of international borders, Chow reiterated his stand that a cautious approach is needed.
“I am not against the reopening of international borders, but it is better to be more cautious.
“The number of daily cases and situation are changing daily, and it is better for us to be vigilant,” he said, adding that the Health Ministry needed about two to three weeks to prepare the SOPs for the reopening of international borders.
